What's Next for Volatility (and Stocks)?

Daily $VIX. It's commonly stated that the VIX isn't chartable. While it's not an "easy" underlying to analyze (nothing is), that hasn't been my experience. What has me concerned is the grinding nature of volatility's recent rise. Normally, the VIX spikes violently and then deflates (ex: August Volmageddon, December pop). However, the pattern of advance has differed over the last 2+ weeks. It's possible that VIX's stair-stepping procession is reflective of persistent institutional demand/hedge accumulation. This action could point to structural unease re: US equities. When market participants are willing to continue buying SP:SPX and VIX options at higher and higher prices (w/ more and more inflated implied volatility), it's either because traders/investors are on the wrong side of the trade (too bearish) or because there's a bigger move setting up...

I previously quoted S&P 5650-5600 as an initial downside target. With the VIX approaching 28.32, its year-end high, stocks could find some footing. There's sub-daily vol "trap" supply 31.17-34.77, so a near-term capitulation flush is also possible. If either scenario plays out, what's to follow will depend on how volatility indices behave post-correction (alongside equity markets trading into supply/resistance). I'll put up another post addressing 'what's next' once markets show their hands - it's not worth speculating right now.

HTF AMEX:SPY targets are lower (5394 is a supportive 1W NYSE:ES $ES_F level to note) and downside momentum remains strong, so now is not a time to "be a hero" and blindly BTFD, regardless of media/internet chatter. Also understand that premium is inflated, so remain nimble if you're jumping aboard the train - it's already left the station.

When markets are this dynamic, preservation is paramount. SEED_WANDERIN_JIMZIP900:VX CBOE:VXX CBOE:VXN CBOEFTSE:RVX
